Feeling stuck in your design career? You’re not alone.
Be Your Own Design Team #35
Quick note from me
I’ve been in design long enough to see patterns repeat. Lately, from surveys and DMs, I see the same struggles come up again and again. Juniors feeling lost, mid-levels feeling stuck, and seniors questioning what’s next. I must say I am lost myself too!
If that’s you, you’re not alone. And I want to break it down into steps you can actually act on.
And btw, don’t forget to fill out my short survey. I want to learn more about you! Your feedback will shape my future content and projects, and there’s a prize to win 🏆

Level 01: If you’re starting out and feel lost
Most juniors think the portfolio is about showing “perfect” projects. But the truth is recruiters just want to see how you think, and verify your skills and relevance.
Don’t wait for the right project. Pick what you do have and shape it into a portfolio story.
Don’t start from a case study, but treat your portfolio as a MVP (use snapshots. You can learn more about it in my portfolio course)
Be strategic in a tough market. Map your skills, fill gaps with side projects, and treat rejections as data to refine your approach.
Most importantly, create opportunities for yourself. Connect with people, go to local events, join design initiatives.
Level 02: If you don’t know what’s next for you
You may have strong skills but feel blocked by the culture around you. Maybe your startup doesn’t value design, maybe you never got to polish UI craft the way you want. Here’s the mindset shift:
Treat your career like a training. If your company doesn’t give you what you need, use side projects, collabs, or small freelance gigs to build the type of work you want in your portfolio.
Start shaping your next role by curating what you show in your portfolio and how you pick your day-to-day tasks.
If you’re unsure what to do with your design career, try the Walt Disney exercise: look at your path through three lenses: the Critic, the Realist, and the Dreamer
Level 03: If you feel that the market feels uncertain
Many designers I talk to complain about AI, pressure, and the tough job market. They’re unsure where the industry is heading. The truth?
No one really knows. We all operate on our own assumptions. My approach: observe, check facts, and make decisions that align with your needs.
AI is here to stay. Use it step-by-step in your processes. You don’t need to master everything, but showing adaptability is key.
Approach it strategically: have a Plan A and Plan B, know your long-term vision, and make decisions that align with it.

My system
No matter where you are, don’t neglect your needs. Treat your career like a product: design it actively, iterate, and improve. You’ve got this.
