Designing with AI

Be Your Own Design Team #33

Quick note from me

I’m back from a month-long holiday in South America. It still feels surreal, because younger me wouldn’t believe I could afford it. I don’t have everything figured out in life, career, or business, but I reached a point where I could treat myself to this trip. And it was one of the best adventures with my husband.

While I was away, I kept thinking about what to create next for you. That’s why I’d love your input. Please fill out my survey. Your feedback will shape my future content and projects, and there’s a prize to win 🏆

Level 01: Assemble AI to fit user needs

AI is not one thing. Think of each technology as a separate piece you can combine to create experiences that actually help users achieve their goals. AI is not everything and it certainly changes very quickly. Be intentional.

Level 02: Keep users at the centre

Make interactions clear and easy to understand. Focus on how people will actually use the product rather than on the technology itself. Notion, for instance, has a new chatbot I like, that suggests action steps instead of just an empty input field that feels intimidating.

Level 03: Prototype quickly

Create flows and mockups that show how AI outputs work in practice. Test them with actual users to see what works and what needs adjusting. The design process is changing. More folks follow: build → test path than research → define.

Level 04: Test small and often

AI changes as it learns. Use real data to improve outputs, handle unusual cases, and make sure the experience keeps getting better. Check analytics, define metrics, and talk with users. Quick testing will help you move in the right direction.

Level 05: Work closely with others

Align with engineers and data experts to make sure your designs match what AI can realistically do. Collaboration will help ensure the final product is useful and reliable. Besides this, we need to learn from them. AI is blurring the boundaries of our responsibilities even more.
